Volume #3 – Before starting the weekend, choose YOU.

Being skinny doesn't mean being healthy.

HI THERE!

I remember when I moved to NYC, I started watching Sex and The City to get myself into the city’s vibes. One moment hit me like a truck; it was from the movie when the queen Samantha Jones is breaking her long-term relationship and says the words “I love you, but I love ME more” and just like that (👀 see what I did there) I realized that wellness is about choosing me unconditionally.

Being skinny doesn't mean being healthy:

In 2016 I was appointed Executive Director of a non-profit in Puerto Rico, living a high-paced life and constantly traveling. My breakfast was from BK, my lunch had no greens, and my dinner was from the first fast food I could find, ending with my favorite comfort food- David's Cookie. All these habits took a toll on my health. My doctor ordered an endoscopy because I was experiencing horrible stomach aches that ended in a diagnosis of gastritis at age 22. There I was, with gastritis and +20 pounds (thanks David’s Cookie), always putting my career and professional commitments before the most important person that will make sure I can show up and give my 100% - me.

You would have thought that having gastritis at 22 and 20 pounds overweight would be enough to provoke any change, but no. Sadly, it was vanity, the mirror, the comments I received from family members saying,

"You're looking a little round." or the one that shook me, "Tell me the truth-are you PREGNANT?"

This is my 6th year on this journey, and with my ups and down (I don’t use the word journey because it sounds nice. It really is a journey.), I can tell you it all comes down to never giving up and choosing to put yourself first. It will initially feel uncomfortable and like pushing dead weight, but like Miley Cyrus said, "Life is a Climb, but the view is great." Routine makes discipline, and discipline gets you results. For a year now, I have decided to choose ME every day and show up by eating healthy and going to the gym.

My wellness rules:

1. A date with myself is equally important as a client meeting or a date with someone else.

2. The gym is MONEY, and money is freedom. As I like to make money to build my generational wealth, I have realized that to make money; I need to be healthy, and to be healthy, I need to choose to show up for myself.

3. My wellness and MYSELF are my main stakeholders. My body is an investment to live longer and works as compound interest (keep tuned to the next week newsletter on wealthiness)."

LET’S GET TO WORK - HOMEWORK!

First things first, don’t you dare feel bad if this is the 100th time you try to build a wellness discipline. Life is about trying, and you should always keep trying. If you feel down or lost, remember your top 3 strengths we discussed in the last newsletter.

NOWWrite on a piece of paper:

  1. What is your goal + Why? Example: Get to your healthy weight, build endurance, flexibility, improve your diet, etc.

  2. How will you track your goal? Example: If you want to build endurance – You will work out 3 times a week for 30 mins. Take pictures of yourself to track your body’s evolution; sometimes, your weight will not change drastically, but you will be more toned.

  3. How will you reward yourself for progressing in May? Example: You managed to work out 3 times per week in May; now you deserve a reward. (Set a budget for this).

PLUS – Wellness is more than physical activity: Book the doctor appointments you have been skipping. Annual checks help prevent your disease risk and keep track of your health year after year.

A way to push yourself is to think about your commitments with others this week – do the same amount of wellness commitments with yourself. If you are meeting 3 friends, do 3 workouts or 2 workouts + 1 doctor appointment.

For every activity you do for others, add one activity for yourself by yourself.
